This is great, but I don't think that those variables are so sensitive
that this must be a compile-time option.  I'd love to see this be a
tuneable instead if you think that it needs to be "turn off and
on-able".

In my ideal world, it would just be on, but I realise that I don't get
to demand that, of course.
