It depends on the laptop. On mine it works:

fk@r500 ~ $sysctl -ad | grep fan
dev.acpi_ibm.0.fan_speed: Fan speed
dev.acpi_ibm.0.fan_level: Fan level
dev.acpi_ibm.0.fan: Fan enable
