I had the same problem. After reading through the FreeBSD Faq's and Mailing List Archives, I determined that the Intel EtherExpress isn't supported very well in the current 2.2.6 release. After pulling our hair out for four or five hours trying to get it working, we gave up, determining that it would be easier for us to get new ethernet cards.
