It may be that you did not run mergemaster properly (knowing which temp
file to delete/install or using sdiff is tricky, one has to get used to
it).

I hope you have a good backup of your previous /etc somewhere, or at
least /etc/group and /etc/master.passwd. You may try to boot a rescue
disk/CD in order to examine your system.
