5.1-RELEASE tested, yielded the same result: "Missing operating system". The installation can boot on a new machine, but can not boot on the 486. Seems like the source of the error is the capabilitiy of the mainboard. I've given up. FreeBSD will not work on this noob machine. Next: lots of floppy OSs.
