the lowlevel driver is different, but the upper layer code is identical.

this problem seems to be in the upper layer.  but having said that, all 3
trouble reports involve sb16-class cards and we have success reports for
other cards.  it certainly doesn't crash with my cmi8738 setup (note that
this driver has not been mfc'd yet).  i'm investigating.
