Java is my #1 choice for language.

Depends.  I've got some really speedy code that runs on FreeBSD, but we
optimized the crap out of it.  (Not just for FreeBSD, but it turns out
the optimizations made all platforms faster, and JIT's don't effect it
much.)

In any case, hopefully FreeBSD will catch up with a faster JVM.  The 1.3
stuff is looking much better, if only we could get the licensing issues
straightened out.  (Is this too much to ask, after 3 years?)
