Hi, I've had no problems with a generic Rockwell-based k56 modem that I flashed to v90 (it was made by Well Modem badged Origo), just make sure it's an ISA card rather than a PCI card, and check that it doesn't say anything like 'requires Windows' on the box. A better brand using quality components, connectors and so on may be good for a few 100bps increase, and possibly better tech support organisation, however as to firmware/design quality there's little difference (why bother changing too much when the reference design works anyway? :-) flash update code is often as good, if not better, with generics. As for reliability of internal modems, the last time I had to reboot to clear a modem problem was last year sometime, with old (known buggy) flash code, it's normally as good as the box it's in (better PSU, not easily disconnected by mistake, no serial cable, no problem with braindead motherboard uart's...)
