I'm sorry, I cannot reproduce this.  My configure passes with the 
following

  checking for ATL_xerbla in -latlas... no
  checking for sgemm_ in -lblas... no
  checking for dgemm_ in -lblas... yes

and I cannot see any other difference than me being on i386 as opposed to 
amd64 and using a prefix different from /usr/local (which, if anything, 
makes things more likely to break). :-(
