UPDATE:

I've located the problem, which apparently causes the condition below 
when calling xrdb to merge the .Xresources file.  It doesn't matter what 
is in .Xresources; an empty file will cause the problem.  It also 
doesn't matter if called from the .xinitrc or command line.
