This is probably because you either don't have standard XFree86
scalable fonts installed or configures. Check that you have
package XFree86-fontScalable-4.2.0 installed and the following
line in your /etc/X11/XF86Config:

FontPath   "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/"
