You can use TERM=xterm-color, or COLORTERM=y.  I use the latter because
most color term entries aren't quite up-to-snuff, and FreeBSD's (at least
when I tried it a few weeks ago with mutt/slang) was no exception.
COLORTERM gets you the TERM=xterm stability + color.
