Turns out that I had DEBUG_FLAGS=3D-g in make.conf. When linking clang with=
 -g the 2GByte limit of i386 is exceeded.

How much memory does your machine have?  I build this regularly, on a VM wi=
th 2G RAM (and 4G swap).
