Paul,

    I don't think I'd blame the OS to start off.. in the past, I've had 
all sorts of strangeness with the xscreensaver in any mode other than 
"none".  Mine usually wound up in a wedged state with a power cycle to 
bring it back..  Could be the nvida, but perhaps somebody else has some 
ideas..
