It's a separate operating system.

'The Complete FreeBSD' by Greg Lehey. It comes with a 4cd set with
the OS on them. Around $70 (US) for the book along with the cds. You
can find out more about it and order it online from Walnut Creek CDROM
at http://www.cdrom.com/titles/os/bsdbook2.htm

Sure. FreeBSD comes with a boot manager so you can run a multiple-OS
system. However, you can't run them both at the same time. You'll
need to reboot to switch back and forth between the two. Take a look
at the the handbook for more info..
