recommending:

=091) make a list of ports, and port options.
=092) back _everything_ up
=093) scrub the disk
=094) install from scratch

=09(2) and (3) can be combined by using a new disk, and keeping the
old one as a permanant archive.
=09Technically, it's more work.  But it avoids several minefields,
and you going to have to (re)build the ports (which is the big time
sink) anyway.
