Here is what lioux replied when I asked him the same question:

 : 	Yes, since Matrox marks this as beta code, I am considering
 : that users must make an aware choice to use it. Unless you believe
 : this should be enabled per default.
 : 	Besides, I am not sure this driver supports graphic adapters
 : other than G200, G400 and G450 (hence the GXX name). Our current
 : mga driver supports more devices:

 : 	MGA1064SG	Mystique
 : 	MGA2164W	Millennium II
 : 	G100
 : 	G200		Millennium G200 and Mystique G200
 : 	G400
