Ok if its connecting to your own box after you connected your dailup link make sure you have your own ip routed back to your loopback driver. I found BSDdip failing to do this. I'm tailing the maillog and notice that some of the incoming stuff to my users is being delivered 'to' the username@dude.cyberbeach.net while other mail is just being delivered to username@cyberbeach.net Is there anything that I can do to ensure or promote all the mail as arriving to username@cyberbeach.net so that none of my users get confused. Guarenteed there will be a small population of users who will start changing their POP and SMTP info and whatnot if they see a change in the headers. In the nameserver, the MX record and the CNAMES all match up to the machine that is now doing mail. BTW, the machine that is now working A-OK is running 2.1-R, the one that was failing was 2.1.5-R. From the old hard drive, the default boot device was wd(0). Now the default boot device is fd(43), etc. What's worse is that a boot floppy for my machine constantly causes a spontaneous reboot and hence cannot be used. I am forced to type wd(0,a)/kernel each time I want to boot. Is there a way to alter the default boot device? I have installed OS-BS 20b8 as my boot manager. Also, is the problem I've been having with the boot floppy typical? Is there a way to create a new floppy image for my machine that won't cause the spontaneous reboot? I've tried both boot.flp floppies for 2.1.5 available at FreeBSD, Inc. I have also found that the boot floppy from my 2.1.0 system does not recognize my IDE CDROM drive, but my recompiled kernel does. Can I do everything above for a 2.1.5 boot floppy with installation tools that has an image of my recompiled kernel? I want this for situations when I have to reinstall my system. It seems that I should be able to do this. After all, someone at FreeBSD did. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks for all your help. Jeffrey M. I doubt there is one correct answer. I prefer mgetty. If my terminal server is dead, I'd prefer the phone not answer, rather than answering but having nothing work. Users understand no answer means the system is dead -- if it connects but doesn't work, the user is left wondering if it's their problem or mine. -- John McNamee MicroWizards Voice: 702-825-3535 / FAX: 702-825-3443 http://www.microwiz.com From owner-freebsd-questions Sun Sep 8 11:34:27 1996 Return-Path: owner-questions Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id LAA14714 for questions-outgoing; Sun, 8 Sep 1996 11:34:27 -0700 (PDT) Received: from atlantis.nconnect.net (root@atlantis.nconnect.net [206.54.227.6]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id LAA14706 for ; Sun, 8 Sep 1996 11:34:25 -0700 (PDT) Received: from arabian.astrolab (dial231.nconnect.net [206.54.227.231]) by atlantis.nconnect.net (8.7.3/8.7.3) with SMTP id NAA24828 for ; Sun, 8 Sep 1996 13:29:37 -0500 (CDT) Message-ID: X-Mailer: XFMail 0.4 [p0] on FreeBSD Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit MIME-Version: 1.0 Date: Sun, 08 Sep 1996 13:30:21 -0500 (CDT) Organization: Computer Specialists / Astrolab Development From: Randy To: questions@freebsd.org Subject: Missing Library ? For the kernel all you have to do is build one that supports the tun0 interface. *I* use a BitSurfer Pro to connect to another BSP on a FreeBSD machine that acts as my dialin-server. I use PPPD though; I find that PPP (aka ijppp) tends to keep disconnecting under heavy load whenever I try to use it. :-( To build a kernel with tun device support, steps are: 1. Go to the config directory: cd /sys/i386/conf 2. Make a copy of the generic kernel config file: cp GENERIC whatever Replace "whatever" with the name of the kernel you want. I call mine "MikesKernel". For the rest of these instructions I'll assume the name "whatever" and you can fill in what you want. 3. Edit "whatever" and add the line pseudo-device tun n where "n" should be "1", "2", etc. - the number of PPP interfaces you'll need. You might also want to stick in a line like pseudo-device bpfilter 6 so that you can use tcpdump on the device (you may have to increase 6; basically there needs to be one bpfilter for each net device. Use "ifconfig -a" to figure out how many devices you have). 4. I also change the "ident" line so that I can differentiate my kernel from the generic one. 5. Config the build files: config whatever 6. Build the kernel: cd ../../compile/whatever make depend make 7. Assuming the kernel builds OK (no reason it shouldn't!! :-) then install it: make install 8. Now reboot. 'course you probably don't have to do all this, since if you're using the GENERIC kernel it should have tun devices built in. Do "ifconfig -a" to see if it does. If so then you should just use the ijppp according to the instructions to talk to the Ascend. One thing the Ascends do that other terminal servers don't necessarily do is they can be configed to _assume_ a PPP link from the start. If yours is so configured then you should _NOT_ to a login script, but rather do authentication via PAP (or preferrably) CHAP. You won't get the standard "Username:"/"Password:" prompts, and your connection will come up MUCH faster... It seems that some OS's don't actually return an error if they can't put a packet on the wire; they just drop the packet silently. This is technically ok for UDP, as it _is_ unreliable. Your programs on Linux and SCO may have been dropping packets without you realizing. This is a regular posting aimed to help both those seeking advice from FreeBSD-questions (the "newcomers"), and also those who answer the questions (the "hackers"**). In the past, there has been some friction which stems from the different viewpoints of the two groups. The newcomers accused the hackers of being arrogant, stuck-up, and unhelpful, while the hackers accused the newcomers of being stupid, unable to read plain English, and expecting everything to be handed to them on a silver platter. Of course, there's an element of truth in both these claims, but for the most part these viewpoints come from a sense of frustration. In this document, I'd like to do something to relieve this frustration and help everybody get better results from FreeBSD-questions. I'm taking the viewpoint of the newcomer here: we have other ways of handling arrogant hackers :-) When submitting a question to FreeBSD-questions, please remember: 1. Nobody gets paid for answering a FreeBSD question. They do it of their own free will. You can influence this free will positively by submitting a well-formulated question supplying as much relevant information as possible. You can influence this free will negatively by submitting an incomplete, illegible, or rude question. It's perfectly possible to send a message to FreeBSD-questions and not get an answer. In the rest of this document, we'll look at how to get the most out of your question to FreeBSD-questions. 2. Not everybody who answers FreeBSD questions reads every message, so please specify a subject. "FreeBSD problem" or "Can't get this to work" aren't enough. If you provide no subject at all, most people won't bother reading it. If your subject isn't specific enough, the people who can answer it may not read it. 3. Please try to format your message so that it is legible, and PLEASE DON'T SHOUT!!!!!. We appreciate that a lot of people don't speak English as their first language, and we try to make allowances for that, but it's really painful to try to read a message written full of typos or without any line breaks. 4. Please don't include unrelated questions in the same message. Firstly, a long message tends to scare people off, and secondly, it's more difficult to get all the people who can answer all the questions to read the message. 5. Please specify as much information as possible. This is a difficult area, and we need to expand on what information you need to submit, but here's a start: - If you get error messages, don't say "I get error messages", say (for example) "I get the error message 'No route to host'". - If your system panics, don't say "My system panicked", say (for example) "my system panicked with the message 'free vnode isn't'". - If you have difficulty installing FreeBSD, please tell us what hardware you have. In particular, it's important to know the IRQs and I/O addresses of the boards installed in your machine. 6. If you don't get an answer, there could be other reasons. For example, the problem is so complicated that nobody knows the answer, or the person who does know the answer was offline. If you don't get an answer after, say, a week, it might help to re-send the message. If you don't get an answer to your second message, though, you're probably not going to get one from this forum. Resending the same message again and again will only make you unpopular. For example, let's assume you know the answer to the following question. You choose which of these two questions you would be more prepared to answer: Message 1: Subject: (none) I just can't get hits damn silly FereBSD system to workd, and Im really good at this tsuff, but I have never seen anythign sho difficult to install, it jst wont work whatever I try so why don't y9ou guys tell me what I doing wrong. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Message 2: Subject: Problems installing FreeBSD I've just got the FreeBSD 2.1 CD-ROM from Walnut Creek, and I'm having a lot of difficulty installing it. The correct term for this activity is "cracker", but the popular press hasn't found out yet. The FreeBSD hackers disapprove strongly of cracking security, and have nothing to do with it. As an example I have my tun0 interface configured using: ifconfig tun0 131.217.8.10 131.217.8.1 netmask 0xffffff00 The default route can be added using route add default 131.217.8.1 This can be automated via the /etc/sysconfig file. The JDK port only installs the JDK components needed for other ports. ``Kaffe'' is a virtual machine that will execute Java code, you may want to install the port for 'kaffe' as well. Is this all > source code? Yes. Programs usually come as source that must be compiled. Some apps (like Netscape) come pre-compiled. Check out the README or INSTALL file included with the distribution for compilation instructions. In the case of minicom, however, it requires extensive changes to work with FreeBSD. Your first stop for software should be the ports & packages archives on ftp.freebsd.org. Many programs have already been ported so all you need to do is use 'pkg_add' to add packages or run 'make' to build ports. See the Handbook for port & package system details. What does that mean, and is there a way around it? Apparently you have installed your FreeBSD slice so that it is above the 1024 cylinder limit. This is not good. If you can, try to get the root partition below the 1024 cylinder mark, perhaps by installing a slice with just root at the beginning of the disk and the rest of the slice at the back of the disk. Well, you could pull the *ENTIRE* distribution, which would be HUNDREDS of megabytes large, but somehow I don't think you want to do that. The idea is to pull the directories that you want, and leave everything else. You at the very least need /bin and /floppies (this is rooted at ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/2.1.5-RELEASE/). See the INSTALL file or the Handbook at http://www.freebsd.org/handbook.html for more information. So you're suggesting I go with SOCKS plus a SOCKSified WINSOCK.DLL, and grab your patches to 4.3 to make it dynamically capable. Since Socks5 is ported to FreeBSD, do you know if v5 can handle dynamic IPs? > Try: http://www.aventail.com, and > > http://www.hummingbird.com > > The sockscap software available from the nec ftp server ("socks home") will > also make access via Win 3.1 to socks easy, but once again you need > winsock access. I don't know what you mean by "Winsock access" but if these Winsocks are independently configured then I could swing it. I'm not in dire need of the DOS LWP tools to get to the outside net, since I have a collection of programs to do that for me under Windows. > >3) Run a firewall. Where can one find this library??? :-) cp /usr/lib/libc.so.2.2 /usr/lib/libc.so.3.0 :-) You downloaded packages from -current for 2.1.5. The copy will fix you up. The requirement is to connect 2 locations and with either end sending outgoing (from each location's point of view) will demand-dial out. But no one side is guranteed to be the one that is doing the dial-out or the answering always, ie it may be one that answers the call. Just think of using it as a simple remote office connection. Are compiled files under FreeBSD and ordinary BSD identical? I will be very thankfull if you can unswer me to those question. They will help me a lot. Regards Darko Stipanicev. As far as we can gather from the almost non-existent documentation, the system uses a mail analogy, but it's apparently not SMTP. I'd like to find a way to send the faxes to a FreeBSD machine and then queue and send the messages with Hylafax. If anybody has experience with this stuff, could you please tell me: - What's the transport protocol? As far as I can see, it's some kind of file sharing, but we don't know what. - What's the format of the (temporary) files that get stored on the server? Can I transform them into something that Hylafax would understand (like PostScript or TIFF)? - Is there any way to stop the server from returning the messages immediately if it can't dial? - Is there any way to send the messages from Word or Excel in PostScript format without selecting 'Fax'? If we could do it as regular mail, that would be fine, but all we've been able to do so far have been octet streams which appear to contain the original application-specific data. - Any other ideas? What I wish to know is whether there is a capability to set the i-flags in printcap file. 2. Not knowing how to set the ixon flag in the printcap, I tried to set it using the stty command. I enter the following "stty -f /dev/cuaa0 ixon". However when I tried to list the settings( stty -f /dev/cuaa0) it did not indicate any change. Indeed stty did not seem to set any flags on any ports. I checked to see if there were processes which were hogging the ports, however I could not identify any. What I am doing wrong? Secondly, where is the best place to intialize the port on startup? Well, the reason is that the rule to go by is that if a machine has more than one IP address those should be on different networks. Since when configuring virtual hosts you normally won't assign addresses from different nets or subnets, using a mask of all 1-s will let you use addresses from the same net. I also think that with 2.1.0 the "do ifconfig twice" bug does not manifest itself when such a mask is given (at least for me it doesn't). Bottom line, that's what I use, it works for me, and for several other people who has problems with aliases, asked a question about it on this list, and got that same answer. > > > b3n > Nadav From owner-freebsd-questions Mon Sep 9 10:58:14 1996 Return-Path: owner-questions Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id KAA07935 for questions-outgoing; Mon, 9 Sep 1996 10:58:14 -0700 (PDT) Received: from gamespot.com (ns1.gamespot.com [206.169.18.2]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id KAA07930 for ; Mon, 9 Sep 1996 10:58:11 -0700 (PDT) Received: from tech-a.gamespot.com (tech-a.gamespot.com [206.169.18.66]) by gamespot.com (8.7.5/8.6.12) with SMTP id KAA24106; Mon, 9 Sep 1996 10:45:28 GMT Message-Id: <199609091045.KAA24106@gamespot.com> Comments: Authenticated sender is From: "Ian Kallen" To: "Ricardo M. I would like to congatulate you on a fine product! Keep up the good work! I am having trouble with the PPP (from the install disk) connecting to my modem. I have a 486 66-8mb Ram, 200 mb hd avail for the unix part., with win95 on the other drive (C:), two 16550 serial ports configured std irq and base address, and a 288 modem hooked up to com 2 (that works on the win95 boot). I went to the -c boot config and the ports are adressed properly but when I go to term in the connect portion I get no response from my at commands (at; atdt; atz). The cursor just goes back to the front of the line and nothing ever responds. The modem light doesn't even flicker like it does when it gets comm from the computer.. any ideas you have would be helpful! Thanks you in advance. I disabled it with the DOS utility that came with the card. I then set the IRQ to something not being used (found that info during boot time...). At the boot: prompt, I typed "-c" and then "visual". I went through each driver and deleted any unused drivers. Also manually set ep0 to the IRQ I had chosen. After that, everything went perfect. Now if I could only get past that nasty compile error I'm getting about bt0 when I try to compile the kernel... Charles On Mon, 9 Sep 1996, Ian Kallen wrote: > What are the error messages?
