Trying to erase these tapes using the mt -f /dev/nrst0 erase command produces (after a few minutes) the following error message: st0(ncr0:6:0): MEDIUM ERROR asc:3b,0 Sequential positioning error Can someone explain what this message exactly means? Both tapes are almost new; they have been used only once before. The only time that the tapes have been used is for making a DOS backup using norton backup for windows. These backups have both failed. I find it hard to believe that both new tapes have a been physical damaged. So, I suspect a soft error on the tape is introduced by the failing of norton backup. Is this possible? I can understand why writing of the tape may be difficult, but I don't understand why erasing this tape fails. Can anyone help?
