Two quick things to report,

* I got my hands on a Promise SATA 150 TX4, and that has the same issue
as the SATA 300 TX4.

* I found a solution for the old SETFEATURES SET TRANSFER MODE issue
from back in April. It seems that by setting the devices on the Promise
card back to UDMA100 from UDMA133, the problem goes away. I haven't
tried this myself - I just discovered it on a Japanese FreeBSD blog.

e.g.
# atacontrol mode ad6 UDMA100
