Just to wrap this one I did have to turn the power off in the end (machine took 
no notice of c-a-d). On rebooting the machine took some time out to do a little 
repair work but otherwise booted normally. Thanks for the replies and the 
information on why UPSes aren't _quite_ as necessary as they were.
