There are a myriad > other lists for holding technical discussions. Two points: 1. If architectural discussions take place on -committers, non-committers should be allowed to join and contribute. 2. Mailing lists like the Tru64-UNIX list disallow replies. You can ask a question and can send a summary of private replies. I belive all they do is key on "re:" in the subject line. Would this be an option for -committers?
