What were the symptoms of your "not having a lot of luck" by just
installing over the old version?

Is there a proven way to upgrade to the latest and greatest XFree86
without having to reinstall all my x-dependant apps? I think I
remember reading a post to this list that mentioned that a binary
install using the install.sh script upgraded X perfectly, but I
haven't been able to find that post. I guess I'm just looking for the
way to accomplish this with the least amount of downtime since this
box is my workstation at work and I don't want to be out of commission
for too long.
