Umm, please, use %Y-%m-%d - it'll sort in the right order.  And you
can just do:

print strftime("%Y-%m-%d\n", localtime());

or

my $logfn = strftime("log.%Y-%m-%d", localtime());

or whatever, no need for an intermediate variable.
