I've had the same problem on occasion too.  FTP and SSH works fine for a
couple of weeks and then all of the sudden it times out.

Definitely a DNS/reverse lookup issue.

To fix the problem:
Just add your remote machine's address/IP to the server's /etc/hosts file.
