I am sure /usr/sbin/ppp include into -current and Latest Snap Shot.
But you still need to re-config kernel including tunnel device 
"pseudo-device tun 0"

No. I don't mean let you forcely move from pppd to ppp. But either one
I think we might need to more information from you. and currently I am
working on /usr/sbin/ppp with author for FreeBSD and other platform.
So I can make sense problem of ppp rather than pppd right now ;-)
