Well, lots of people have said this. Windows certainly gets it to
work, they might of course by querying the drive and realising it's
a ony but I've certainly done nothing in Windows other than start
up the cd player.

Someone said that their Sony drives worked fine, workman has code to support
a Sony drive but the FreeBSD port is broken in that it doesn't do any
drive queries to find out what it is.

I hacked the code so that it did do a drive query and the SCSI_INQUIRY
command failed! Regardless of non-standard audio commands I suspect
there's something more generic wrong if I can't even get the drive
to tell me what it is.

I'm open to ideas but I can't do any work on this until next weekend because
I'm back at work and the box is at home.
