I ased Dirk what he has, and he _is_ using 1542's. But without a BIOS.
Apparently the CAM stuff broke support for BIOS-less 1542's.

Dirk, you could always try sending a mail to freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org and
asking if anyone knows of a work around.
