The funny thing is, XFree86-3.3.6 (the one 'default' in FreeBSD) has the same
issue.  I've been fiddling with just about everything (including running the
linux binary) to no avail.

Indeed.  GNU's not UNIX ... might it be linux though? ;-)

I'll have a look into that :-)  If anyone knows how to figure GDM out though
... I'd love to know how.
