To lookup users/groups in Samba, do you suggest winbindd or something else?

I experimented with winbindd several years ago, tried to avoid adding
local users for Windows Domain users on a samba file server. I found
winbindd unusable for production at the time, it crashed all the time.
Had to return to creating local users with "add user script".

Do you speak from experience?
