Because learning how to use some of the other tools outside the scope of the ports tree is kind of interesting, imho. I'd like to learn more about gcc and other tools for building software in FreeBSD, even if its just a purely academic pursuit. I guess working on a layer lower than the ports collection adds some satisfaction to my curiousity. There are those who use their cars solely for transportation, and others who enjoy restoring them/taking them apart/modifying them. I think the same kind of principles apply.
