If it was a SCSI problem, why did older SNAPS (especially 3.0-970807-SNAP
which I used for almost 1 year) work fine on exactly the same hardware?

Yes all 3 systems are P5 based. In the future I want to upgrade to
Pentium II systems. How stable is SMP on such systems? Can someone
give me hints what hardware to buy?
