A bad news here.. Since this merger, such 3.x binaries as JDK 1.1.8
have been unable to deal with locales correctly under 5.0-CURRENT.

It goes like this: A 3.x dynamic linked binary seeks libc.so.3 and
libxpg4.so.2, and finds /usr/lib/compat/libc.so.3 and
/usr/lib/libxpg4.so.2 respectively, but neither of them actually has
setlocale() because the latter is just a dummy now. Thus it can't do
a setlocale()..

Now, you have to do two more things immediately to fix this situation:
To bump the shlib version of libxpg4 to libxpg4.so.3, and to include
libxpg4.so.2 in the compat packages.
