Fair enough; everyone starts somewhere.... :-)

OK. This sounds as if nameservice (DNS) isn't set up properly.

Generally, it's been my experience that trying to get sendmail working
has DNS setup as a prerequisite.

One of the key files, on the machine that is running sendmail, is the
/etc/resolv.conf file. You need to point to (at least) one valid
nameserver there.

If your network doesn't have a valid nameserver handy, you should
probably create one (even if it's a caching-only nameserver).

(If you're not using TCP/IP -- e.g., a UUCP-only use of sendmail -- then
the situation is a bit different, but even I stopped doing that about 4
or 5 years ago.)

I think that should go a long way toward resolving what you see.

For FAXing, HylaFAX (formerly known as "FlexFAX"), by Sam Leffler;
there's "port" (in /usr/ports/comms/hylafax). I used FlexFAX on a BSDI
(now BSD/OS) system about 4 years ago; it worked well. Dunno about
the others.
