 Just as a note: I hacked together something with hwpmc to generate NMIs 
 and drop to the debugger, and even that did not interrupt this hang. 
 Note, however, that this would not interrupt a halted cpu.  So either it's 
 that, or a hardware crash of some kind, I guess.
 
 Btw, the newline behavior seems to have gone away in further tests.
