I am not sure what you mean. If you mean a script to pull out the
relevant stuff, yeah I assumed that was my next step. If I missed your
point...

I was sorta going for a list something like

   :
/var/tmp/temproot/etc/ssh/ssh_config      merged
/var/tmp/temproot/etc/ssh/sshd_config     merged
/var/tmp/temproot/etc/ppp/ppp.conf        installed
/var/tmp/temproot/etc/crontab             deleted
/var/tmp/temproot/etc/hosts               deleted
   :
/var/tmp/temproot/newstuff/something.conf added
   :

perhaps with a date since I have spent about 3 days on and (mostly) off
merging and installing away.
