(1) Perl5 will not go in to -stable (which is the current "supported"
    release, and we have one more release coming up from that branch),
    so it will not be moot.

(2) The add-on packages (p5-* ports) will remain in the ports tree, so
    I don't understand why perl5 going into /usr/src has anything to
    do with the situation.
