Go for it.  See 'egcs' and 'gcc-2.8' for some examples of how easy it 
might be.

Seriously; we don't maintain gcc.  Feel free to pester the maintainers
about this.  Meanwhile, simply be advised that optimiser levels above -O
are known to cause problems, and don't yield any significant performance
benefits.
