You should ring the video card people back and tell them that they shouldn't
try to be useful when it comes to unix systems 8)

The FreeBSD kernel avoids doing anything in that area for exactly that
reason.

I understand from your other message that you're using an ET4000w32p-based
card.  

Current X servers have endless grief with this chipset - I can only suspect
that either the chips are a pain to program, or that useful information on
them is hard to come by.

In either case, the w32p is a not a good choice for X; I'd recommend an S3
based card myself.
