I have a slightly newer gdb that I built mainly for post-mortem
kernel debugging.  If you get a chance, try
http://www.freebsd.org/~gallatin/gdb.gz.  I've not yet tried this with 
an egcs built world.

I'll start building the world with your changes (thanks!) and take a
look at it myself.  I make no promises; I'm generally not good with
compiler /  toolchain problems.
