the PPP link control protocol has two message types called "LCP echo" and
"LCP echo reply", which do what you guess.

Linux people started to use them to workaround buggy serial drivers that 
dont provide SIGHUP on hangup some years ago. They usually send a LCP echo
every couple of seconds, and tear the connection down if they dont
receive two or three of the replies in a row.
