Mike,

Try taking the "security=..." line completely out of smb.conf. What
happens?

What does your log file say? (/usr/local/samba/var/log/log.smb on my box).

On your 98 Box, are both the Workgroup and NT Domain are set to
the same thing as the Samba config file's "workgrou = " setting?
All upper case? Are the passwords and user names all lower case?
