I've run across this before, and it should be fairly easy to fix. If you just look for where Dir_FindFile goes on, and the fstat'ing, and so on, and trace this down to the simplest failure case, and fix it. I'm not the make maintainer, and as I was reminded "make belongs to all of us", you surely can find someone else who would do it. I'm sorry I can't help you, it's just too hard to work on make.
