I use ircd hybrid (ports collection) for the server and I have a few java
freebie IRC clients embedded in web pages for the end users.  

Works well.

Try /usr/ports/net/irc ; at one point irc.blackened.com (running
FreeBSD) exceeded 8000 clients.  I don't know what the current record
is, or what platform it's running.
