That is pure arrogance.

Long ago, BSD contained a few bits of real UNIX source code.
This was removed to settle a lawsuit. So now there isn't any
real UNIX source code, but some people have feelings about
the "heritage" and "tradition" of it all.

It is in fact illegal to call FreeBSD a real UNIX. The UNIX
name is a trademark which is licensed to any OS that can pass
a compatibility test. FreeBSD isn't even close to passing the
test, while Linux has at least passed the POSIX subset of it.
As an example, "ps -ef" is a common UNIX command that FreeBSD
does not support. It works fine on Linux, Solaris, AIX, etc.

Two interesting facts: Several Linux developers are helping to
write the next set of UNIX requirements. The UNIX source code
is now owned by a Linux company called Caldera.

Linux apps are now more common than UNIX apps, and far more common
than FreeBSD apps. Anything you really need?

Debian is a very good distribution, but it might not have PPPoE
on the base OS disks.

The second best distribution is Red Hat. It is very easy to
install from CD-ROM. For a x.0 release like 7.0, you should
be sure to check www.redhat.com for the latest updates.
