This is documented in the make(1) manpage.

Previously, make(1) only canonicalized ${.CURDIR} but not ${.OBJDIR}.
Now ${.CURDIR} != ${.OBJDIR} test works not only syntactically, but
physically.  This somehow relates to the recent `cleandir' problem.
