Argh, the space gains I saw were in the uncompressed kernel and translated to
only 8k of savings in the compressed one.  The alpha kernel is still 20k over
budget:

# du -k /R/stage/image.kern
211     /R/stage/image.kern/boot
1460    /R/stage/image.kern

Note that once I test may latest set of changes to the release stuff, we will
be able to use the GENERIC kernel for CD booting, so if there are platforms
which just have CD's and not floppies, we can safely axe them from the BOOTMFS
kernel used on the floppies.
