Do a search on "RFC 1521". You also might want to check out W. R. Stevens' _TCP/IP Illustrated_ Vol. 1, pp. 456-8. Also, in the bibliography of the Stevens book is M. T. Rose's _The Internet Message: Closing the Book with Electronic Mail_, with the comment "A book on Internet mail, with details on MIME."
