i tried to interrupt booting process as you advised in previous email 
but that didn't work. i spotted some text from grub, then something like 
[FreeBSD-a.out ..... and then reset.

anyway, i've fixed it for now by booting from CD and renaming 
/boot/loader.old to /boot/loader
i'll try to investigate on this later on.
