Well, a little bit of scanning of the mailing list archives and a look at the documentation will help this situation. If you compiled XFree86 with PAM support, then you may need to add the following entry to your pam.conf file in order to log in. # Don't break startx xserver auth required pam_permit.so BTW, I had the same problem as you, but a quick scan of the archives turned up the answer very quickly. To my amazement, this entry existed in the file /usr/src/etc/pam.conf.
